Guangzhou Julong Bay: A Beacon of Rebirth

Ann Yu's Award-Winning Revitalization of Historic Warehouses into a Modern Exhibition Center

Ann Yu, a renowned designer, has breathed new life into a group of nearly century-old warehouses in Guangzhou, transforming them into a city-planning exhibition hall and civic center. This project, named Guangzhou Julong Bay, has been awarded the prestigious Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2023 for its innovative approach to conservation and revitalization.

The warehouses, located on the west bank of the Pearl River, were once a significant granary of Guangzhou. Built in the 1950s, these brick structures have stood the test of time. However, as part of the city government's renewal master plan, these warehouses have been given a new lease on life. The project's key objectives were to retain the industrial past as a reminder of history while creating a modern space that encourages participation in the rebirth of the old district.

Yu's design approach was to ensure the new space's functional usability while presenting the old site in an attractive way to the younger generation. The original structure and materials of the warehouses were preserved as much as possible, while customized imitated clay bricks were used in the new construction. A large-span steel frame and full-slope glass curtain wall system were also incorporated into the design, creating a harmonious blend of old and new.

The project faced numerous challenges, primarily due to the historical significance of the site. However, Yu's innovative approach to conservation revitalization provided a solution. The open void space of the original site was incorporated into the new space, creating a non-thematic visiting/reception/resting space. This allowed for a good functional and logical organization of space within the limited scope of the renovation.

One of the unique features of the design is the glass and steel canopy built on the parallel barns. This not only enabled the interior to be rearranged flexibly but also gave the building a steady yet energetic characteristic. The steel structure of the canopy extended on both sides to the ground, forming a corridor that brought in the riverside landscape and created a coexistence with the original plants on the site. This interaction between the building and the natural environment helped to build a friendly and cozy ambiance for the interior.

Guangzhou Julong Bay is a testament to the power of adaptive reuse and revitalization. It not only preserves the past but also paves the way for the future, serving as a beacon to investors, developers, and citizens. The project has been rated a high score in the SITES Sustainable System, becoming the first to achieve that in China. This award-winning design by Ann Yu is a shining example of how old buildings can be given a contemporary significance, contributing to the urban landscape while respecting history.
